When your car engine is misfiring, you take it in for a tune up. If your vision is a getting blurry, you go in for new glasses. A piano tuner is called when your playing is a bit off key. But what can you do when your body is showing signs of wear and tear and needs resetting? Bowenwork can help the body to restore its natural balance.

Last week, Sandra Gustafson, a senior faculty member of the Academy, presented two posters on Bowenwork at the American Holistic Nurses Association's 34th Annual Conference in Portland, OR. The conference theme was Through the Looking Glass: A Vision of Holistic Leadership and the conference was designed to explore possibilities for nurses to deepen their influence in all healthcare settings, provide information on the role of nurses in the Affordable Care Act and point to innovative strategies for transforming nursing practice. This is the poster that was used for the Research portion of her presentation.

Nowhere is the magic of Bowen more evident than in time-critical sporting applications........you have only seconds to apply a move or two, or if you're lucky, a full minute to work some magic before the player sucks it up and has to go back in the game.

Bowenwork is a gentle, soft-tissue relaxation technique. It is an unusual form of bodywork, in that the moves are performed in specific locations on the body, followed by pauses of several minutes between sets of moves, to allow the body to integrate the effects of the work. The rolling motion of the basic Bowtech move is different from any massage stroke or other manipulation. Learning it requires the letting go of skills and expectations learned elsewhere. Also, the muscles may take a day or two to respond to the signals.

Many people ask, "Why is it so important that Bowenwork not be mixed with other modalities on the same day?" Sometimes students or clients perceive this guideline as self-serving for the Bowen therapist, or narrow-minded within the Bowen world, or simply unimportant. The fact is, many people never learn what Bowenwork can really do to stimulate healing in the body, because they do not explore Tom Bowen's approach in enough depth to truly understand it.

The Physical Therapy department at a Texas Recovery Center for Veterans provides services for active duty soldiers, both those injured in training and those recovering from combat injuries. After providing an in-service briefing to the 6 therapists (none of whom had ever heard of Bowen Therapy), demonstrating the BRM procedures and encouraging them to refer to me those soldiers who had basically reached an end state with their physical therapy, they agreed to do so. They shared with me that they felt they had a lot of patients who were still in pain and discomfort after physical therapy and they had been looking for more that they could offer to help them on the road to recovery.

Mike, a reader from Illinois, told me about the Bowen technique, a unique Australian bodywork, that has been used for years to treat a wide variety of conditions, such as asthma and other respiratory problems, low back pain, colic, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, frozen shoulder, knee pain, sports injuries, headaches (including migraines) and gastrointestinal disorders. It is completely safe and appropriate for everyone -- from newborns to the frail and elderly.

Marie-Josée St-Onge of Quebec City, Canada volunteered her services at the "Ironman World Triathlon Championship" by treating the athletes with the Bowen technique. The current course record winning time is a bit over 8 hrs, so it is easy to imagine the healing needs of the athlete. Guy Rossi, a 60 year old Frenchman, runs the triathlon all over the world. In July 2008, he ran the double triathlon in Quebec City. This is his testimony:

Many stressed-out people feel achy and stiff in their muscles and joints, their posture changes under the burden of their situations, which in turn leads to feeling burned out, and the cycle of pain is exacerbated. Bowenwork is a unique and unusual form of soft-tissue bodywork that is very effective in relaxing muscle tension and reducing the body’s stress levels.

Both the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in their studies on stress have found that stress-related depression is predicted to be the leading occupational disease of the 21st century..............Bowenwork is a gentle bodywork technique that resets dysfunctional tension patterns in muscles and nerves that are causing discomfort and pain. It relaxes the whole body in a very profound way and facilitates the body to start healing itself -however you do not need to be sick or in pain to benefit from Bowenwork - everybody is better with Bowenwork!

My active days came to a slight halt around my 21st birthday. After a random incident of knee pain and swelling, surgery was necessary to remove some damaged cartilage. I recovered from the simple surgery with no complications, but the swelling remained in my knee. A number of anti‐inflammatory drugs, specialists and tests lead to the prognosis of moderate to severe rapidly progressing Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
